When library manager Sharon Reeves started working for the Union-Tribune Publishing Company 30 years ago, the firm published two newspapers, electric typewriters were the height of technology and library clerks spent much of their time checking spellings and pulling old clippings for reporters.

"When I came, the resources were the phone book, almanac, reverse directory and the clips," Reeves said. At one time, there also were index cards listing articles in various magazines carried by the library.

Some library staff time was spent answering questions for the public, which included settling barroom bets, recalls Dick Harrington, who began working here in 1969 while studying at San Diego City College. But that service to the public ended 22 years ago. Now, Union-Tribune subscribers may access most stories that appeared in the newspaper between Jan. 1, 2000 and the present by going to www.SignOnSanDiego.Com and clicking on "archives."
